Run, Forrest!
Mom on the Run tagged me for this running meme…way too long ago! Sadly, I’m only running about once a week right now, and it’s my own fault.
1. How would you describe your running 10 years ago?
Ten years ago is almost out of reach in the far corners of my memory. My first running attempt was around ten years ago. I was in university having finished my first degree and just starting my second, and lived in a basement apartment – just me and Chloe (the cat we still live with today). I was bored on a Friday afternoon and thought “Hmm, I think I’ll go for a run.” Boy, was that stupid. I put on my Nike watch to time myself (normally only used to time sets in the weight room at this point in my life). I ran down the park path for exactly eleven minutes before realizing I’d never get home because I could no longer move my limbs.
2. What is your best and worst run/race experience?
My best, and probably slowest, was the Red Deer 1/2 marathon. Not only was it the longest formal run I’d ever done but it was just an amazing experience to run with all of those people who actually, you know, knew how to run. I didn’t. I still don’t. I don’t think I’ve had a really bad one…I’ve had really hard ones but as my former running club coach told me, “We call those ‘character building runs.’”
3. Why do you run?
I have no idea. It’s hard and I suck at it but I love it nonetheless. I love the feeling of freedom, the time away from all obligations, the mind-clearing that happens as my legs struggle to move along the pavement.
4. What is the best or worst piece of advice you’ve been given about running?
When I joined the marathon training club, John Stanton (the founder of the Running Room) was the guest speaker at our sign up night. He was the one who taught me to “Run 10, Walk 1″ and that advice has kept me going on many a long run. Knowing that I only had to run for a few more minutes before I could walk (fast) and take a drink made many runs that seemed impossible possible.
5. Tell us something surprising about yourself that not many people would know.
All of my closest friends would know this, but because of my running experience I can pee ANYWHERE. During many of my races I peed side by side along the paths with men and women. We chatted about how the run was going, peed, and went on our merry way.
Thanks, Janice – that was fun!
Do any of you run?

Running has never been something that I have enjoyed too much, but I did start to get into it late last fall…and then I became pregnant and well…..that was the end.

I’ve been running about a year now and I hate it while I’m doing it but love it when I’m done if that makes sense. I’m going for my first 5K in October.

I run…rather I did until my last 10k when the physio said no more. I have been fighting stupid IT problems. He said I might be able to start this week but it is really acting up again for some reason. I was hoping to train with B. for a half marathon but unless this heals soon thst will be out he window.

That is a good way to work it in your head the run 10 walk 1. I am still giving’er running 4-5 times a week and swimming the other nights (I think I was running too often and hurting myself)
