Ask The Audience: More Bed Crap
1. Any tips on how to get a toddler to sleep in his bed instead of on the floor behind his door? Those carpet marks on his face can’t be comfortable. I have, on occasion, gone in and moved him into his bed before I go to bed. Sometimes it works and sometimes he stays up crying about his teeth because he’s woken up and been reminded of the pain. It’s so not worth it. Bribes totally don’t work either.
2. When will I safely be able to remove the child-safe knob cover from inside his door and not worry about him being that kid you read about in the newspaper that’s running naked down the street at 3 am?
3. Related: He’s almost ready to go to the bathroom in the night but he’d never go back to bed. He’s dry through his nap and wakes up needing to pee about half the time at night or wakes up dry. How on earth do you make that transition? I’m thinking pull ups at night until all the teeth are in at least. A kid who wakes up and wants to play because he peed at 4 am is not fun.
(News! He cut the second last molar last week. One corner of it anyway. We can see the light at the end of the very freaking long tunnel now. In other news, Bella has two cute little bottom teeth and we didn’t even know they were coming. If I didn’t create, grow & birth them both I’d never know they were related.)

Geez, you are truly fighting a few different battles…not fun!
We had the bunny on a crib mattress on the floor beside her big girl twin bed until she was almost three. She just wasn’t ready to sleep in that high up bed. Maybe that would help with the transition and at least he wouldn’t be on the carpet?!?
As far as the peeing thing goes. Until he goes dry night after night after night, I personally would put him in pull ups. One battle at a time, maybe?
Good luck!

I would wait till his teeth are less of a burden on him. I know you already have a routine set up, but keep at it. We used to take Becs to the bathroom right before we went to bed, but she always fell right back to sleep. She couldn’t open the door at that age so we did not have that issue. Sorry I do not have more ideas!

we just put my son in a toddler bed. the first few weeks were challenging. he just wanted to sleep with me all the time. but i started this routine where i read him a couple books in bed instead of on the couch, then tuck him in, and put my head on the end of his bed for a little while. i say, “oh, i love this bed! i wanna sleep here ALL night!” then i stay there and wait until he falls asleep. occasionally he’ll wake up in the middle of the night and cry out, “mama, lay wif you!” sometimes i have to go back in and put my head on the bed until he falls asleep again, but lately i just haven’t been responding and he ends up just falling back asleep on his own. but what has totally changed is that he no longer gets up and sneaks into bed with me anymore, which i think is a big step. so, i guess what i’m saying is, make the bed seem fun. read books in bed or act like you LOVE the bed and you, yourself, want to sleep there. that’s what i did.

aaahhh, yes! the toilet training in the night! G has been toilet trained for 2 years now and still wears a pull up at night. He drinks A LOT all day long, which is great but it’s hard during the night.
Talked to the doctor and they said not to worry about it, when he’s ready we’ll know.
He of course wants to be diaper free so we’ve said that when there are 4 sleeps in a row when he wakes up dry we’ll get rid of the diapers.
Although ask me if we still have the same plan at his next birthday!
We used to have a gate at the top of the stairs and we would close it at night so if our son got up he couldn’t go downstairs, but could come to us.
I know of some people who would put a gate at the bedroom door.

I have no idea on how to get him to sleep in his bed! I guess if he’s sleeping pretty well through the night just leave him there
We did pull-ups for Kayla at night – she is a hard sleeper and doesn’t wake up to go to the bathroom. 99% of the time she was waking up dry though and I got tired of spending money on pull ups that weren’t really being used. So she’s in underwear now. A few times she’s gone enough where we had to change her sheets, but now she’s either dry, or she’ll wake up and we take her to the bathroom and she goes. But she also goes right back to sleep, so we’re lucky there I guess!

No advice here – Sierra slept in her crib until she was 2.5 and no longer fit. We then moved her to a big girl bed. She never ever tried to crawl out of it – she just laid there and screamed until we came to her. SHe still does – and she’s 3 1/4. Brooke is like Bella – you would never ever believe that she and Sierra came from the same place ’cause OMG- they are insanely different. As I begin to ponder having a third I’m beginning to enjoy the differences and look forward to hopefully one day getting to know another. Congrats on the 2nd last tooth! It won’t be long now!
