Wanna be my friend? Can I poke you?
This?
Cracked me the hell up.
I have students, school parents, coworkers I barely know and some I don’t even like, old friends, new friends, photography customers, bloggers, family and possibly the pope as friends on facebook. I’m debating solidifying the lines drawn between who I’ll accept as a friend, and who I won’t. But how? Do I go back and delete people who don’t fall within those guidelines? The few students I have on there are ones I adore and wouldn’t want to hurt. The few parents I have on there are great too. What do you tell a coworker when you dump her? Sometimes I like to swear – because heck just doesn’t cut it and, quite frankly, sounds stupid – and then I feel bad for the 12 year old who reads that coming from her teacher. (Nothing bad – just shit or hell primarily.) If I didn’t use it so much for my photo business, I’d be glad to delete the account. But then I’d probably regret it because it’s how we keep in touch for playdates, and how we are planning reunions and how I have gotten back in touch with some really great high school friends. Hmmmm. I have deleted everyone I have never heard from since accepting them, and have never accepted anyone I don’t actually know.
Are you happy with your friend list? Can you be yourself on facebook?

Ever since Facebook made the announcement that they would “own” all material (photos, text etc) indefinitely (even if you deleted your account) I have been less enthused by it. They did retract that stating they were “misunderstood” but still. My photos are MINE not to be used in future ads for Facebook.
I am so happy to reconnect with some old pals from out west that I had completely lost touch with. And I love getting people talking about stuff (hene the blog too I guess). But i am never at complete ease online.
Not sure I answered your question. Wish I was sleeping. lol

A few months ago I did what I like to call a “Weed and Feed” on my facebook list. I left comments on the friends that I would never want to lose, and went ahead and deleted ALL the other people. I think I ended up deleting 60′ish.
I only heard back from one of them… she’s a horrible gossiper from my old church, someone I never really wanted to be associated with anyway. She sent me a FB inbox message that said something like, ‘wth? Did you delete me?” And it was so easy for me to just say “Yeah, don’t take it personally – I deleted a bunch of people from my account.”
She replied stating that I hurt her feelings – but instead of saying, “Uhm, did you really consider us to be FRIENDS?” I just let it go. I’m so much happier now that I don’t have to pretend to like her. And all the others too, for that matter.
I hate that facebook has hijacked the term “Friend.” But, at least now I can be myself on facebook and I can still keep up with all the people that I love or care about.

No kidding about the word “friend.”
And good for you for doing that!

Actualy, yes! I’ve started out only adding people that I know; friends, family, etc. So I feel very happy with my choices.

I really should delete more people, but my ego likes that I *almost* have 200 friends … geek!

That was the funniest thing! As I write I am also putting it up on my ‘wall’!!
I decline a lot. My thought process is…if I saw you in the mall would I stop and talk to you?!?
Yes! -then I will be your friend!
No! -decline!
I do know that facebook has put me back in contact with old friends who I am now just as close with as back then. Overall it has saved me from going crazy this past year or two…along with the blog of course!!

I have the highest security settings on there and am definitely ME on there, too. I don’t use it for anything other than personal use, and I’ve found that a bit of a pain at times — wanting to use it for business things — but, have sacrificed it so I can be on it comfortably. The first time I was on Facebook I found too many people from the past or students trying to add me, but now with the high settings, it’s all good this second time around. I’m enjoying it sooooo much more and don’t have any problems.
My students ask me a lot about Facebook and I tell them that as their teacher, I’m not allowed to add them and it wouldn’t be appropriate. They completely understand. We are friendly, but we’re not friends, as harsh as that sounds, but that’s the professional road I feel I have to stay on. I’m hearing far too many spooky stories about people getting into sketchy areas on Facebook.
