I Buy Canadian!

I love shopping, and I especially love shopping online.

I try to buy Canadian as much as possible (and promote Canadian business via reviews at TOP)but it’s not all patriotism. It’s also frugality. I love supporting the economy of my country, I love supporting any parent-run business and I love not leaving the house to shop…but I hate (HATE!) paying shipping charges. I’ll take a free shipping deal any day. When I do have to pay shipping, it’s much cheaper when I buy from Canadian companies. (But I’ll usually stop the ordering process if I can’t find a free shipping code - one will come along eventually!)

Speaking of shipping, shopping Canadian (and even better, local) greatly reduces the environmental damage from shipping items across the continent and overseas.

Really, there’s nothing bad about supporting the Great White North!

Apples n’ Oranges is hosting the ultimate I Buy Canadian blog party to spread the word about shopping Canadian.

Big Box Mart

In light of all the toy recalls, here’s some weekend viewing for you.

Support the little guys. We recommend some great ones over here. An extra buck or two could save your kid from lead (or freaking date rape drug) poisoning and someone else’s kid from working in a factory all day to make your Big Box Mart and Dollar Store crap.

Hopping off my soap box now. For a little while, anyway.

;-)

So, are you shopping at WalMart for your kids Christmas presents this year? Online? Small local suppliers? How are you going to make sure they’re not loading up on lead? Or GHB? Have you tried the home lead testing kits? Are you remaining in staunch denial? Do tell.

If you can’t guarantee me it’s safe and natural, it’s not going to be found in my house. Frankly, it’s just not worth it.

(My kid? Needs NO toys. We have a garage full of things for him and three toy boxes full in the house. I’ve started getting rid of stuff just to make some room. Anything made in China that has any paint on it is so far gone it’s not even funny. Anyone else in the same boat? What are you buying instead?)

Shmall-tart

You know that store? The one that rhymes with Shmall-tart?

I don’t like it.

I despise their business practices and their negative effect on the take home pay of retail workers (see the high cost of low prices in this movie). The uneducated who need jobs can usually find them there, but many still need some sort of public assistance to make ends meet. These are primarily decent, hard-working folks, and it’s just not fair.

So yesterday, I was in Walmart (Hello? Hypocrite, much?) because I had to return something that someone else had purchased there(Have I redeemed myself now?) and I overheard a conversation that left me shaking my head in wonder. I try hard not to judge other parents about their parenting choices and I’m really not a sancti-mommy (I said I try, okay? I’m not always successful.) but sometimes I wonder why we allow just anyone to have a child without forcing at least some type of parenting and children’s health education upon them. I’m sure there are many lovely, healthy patrons of this store, but every time I go (which is increasingly rare) I encounter at least one person or family similar to this:

Mom: Do you want the supersize Mr. Big or the supersize Oh Henry?
Child 1 (5-ish years old): I want the Mr. Big (grabs it and adds it to the cart full of chips and other crapola).
Child 2 (3-ish years old): I want the other one (grabs it and adds it to the cart full of “health”). It will be yummy after my fries and gravy at bowling.
Mom: (In a very mean-toned voice) No, we’re not having fries and gravy for supper tonight. We’re having these instead. (At which point, she roughly grabbed her younger child and tossed her into their cart.)

I’d like to think that this was an exception to the rule. Even we health-crazy parents have a cheat-day now and then. It might even be a good thing. Teaching flexibility and all that. However, it was rather apparent that this plan for dinner was not the exception, but the rule. The mother was morbidly obese and both children were well on their way. (Dad was rail thin. Why is that?) I’m sure this woman was being the best mother she knew how to be. She must have been, because who would ruin their child’s health on purpose? But really, come on! You have to know that a chocolate bar does not a supper make.

So, I’m curious…

Answer honestly. Clarify in comments if you like. I admit, I go sometimes. About 3-4 times a year. I like to save money with the best of them, but I’d much rather support a local store owner or at least a company that’s a little smaller and a little less corrupt. We vote with our wallets, after all.

I’m afraid of it.

I’m away visiting my parents - my dad starts chemo on Wednesday so I’ll be here with him until Friday.
I’ll try to post, but you never know. Miss me, okay?
Keep coming back. and…watch for a new custom designed theme by Chelle coming soon! That should keep you coming back.

I have a confession to make.

I’m scared of E-bay.

It’s a little humiliating for an internet-savvy gal like myself.

So many people love it. I’m guessing my sister in law does 90% of her shopping on E-bay. My exported SoCal friend gets awesome deals on a regular basis.

I’m scared of inflated shipping charges.
I’m scared of buying something I don’t like and not being able to return it.
I’m scared of nasty exchange rates.
I’m scared of selling something and it costing me more to ship than I had anticipated.
I’m scared of selling something and not receiving my money for it.

I have bid on two items in the last week and breathed a huge sigh of relief when I was outbid.

Help. How do I get over this fear?
