The Big Guy is a crappy sleeper. That’s Crappy with a capital ‘C.’ He needs his memory foam pillow, the perfect temperature, complete silence (or white noise, but nothing extraneous), wakes at the slightest movement or sound from me, and wakes with a headache many mornings. He probably gets a good sleep a couple of times a month. It doesn’t help that we have two children of the non-sleeping variety, but I can get up with either of them and go right back to sleep. He’s up for hours.
Just before Christmas he saw our family physician who referred him to the local sleep clinic. He did a home assessment for which we hooked him up to some sensors for a night and then spent a night at the clinic under supervision and, again, hooked up to a ton of crap. The nurses at the clinic told him he snores so loud that my earplugs wouldn’t help but that there wasn’t any sign of apnea. When he got the results from the home test from the respiratory dude via our family doc, though, there was a lot of apnea happening. Tomorrow morning he sees the actual sleep doctor to get the official results of both studies. We’re pretty sure they’re going to tell him he has sleep apnea and that he’ll get a 2 week trial with a C-Pap machine to see if it works before we fork out $1500 for his own. It’s likely something that shouldn’t wait until fall when I’m working and we have good coverage again. He has benefits – but not as good as mine – and we haven’t looked into how much either plan would cover at this point.
So, here’s my question for you. Do you, or someone you know, have sleep apnea? Do you, or they, use a C-Pap machine? Any advice? Product suggestions? Anything? Bueller?
Updated to add: Results are that he has mild apnea and because he’s not overweight he has a few options. He gets a 2 week trial on a C-Pap and if he hates it he can try a dental appliance of some kind. We should hear from the C-Pap clinic within 2 weeks to schedule the trial and will go from there.
